Kitchener-Waterloo Profile
Kitchener-Waterloo is located in the southwest part of the province of Ontario, Canada. Using the 401 highway as a reference point, it is situated approximately 100 kilometres west of Toronto and approximately 300 kilometres east of Windsor.

Here in K-W we are known as both the Twin Cities, and along with the cities of Cambridge and Guelph, form the ‘Golden Triangle’.

According to the 2011 census, Waterloo Region is now the 10th largest urban centre in Canada. We continue to grow with a population increase averaging around 1.67% per year. Our Regional population is currently around 535,000; the Region’s official plan has our growth reaching 729,000 by 2029.

We are proud of our two universities – University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, and our Conestoga College.

Our economy is extremely diversified, which has allowed our Region to continue to adapt during times of economic uncertainty. We are part of Canada’s Technology Triangle, with well known high tech companies such as BlackBerry, Waterloo Maple Software, ATS, Open Text, and Com Dev.

We are also known for the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics; CIGI (Centre for International Governance Innovation ), the Institute for Quantum Computing.

The Communitech Hub and Accelerator Centre allow for start-up companies to access mentoring, partnerships, and funding to help get new business to succeed.

A few interesting facts you may not know about local businesses:

- Christie is the world leader in digital motion projection systems
- Com Dev is the largest designer and manufacturer of space systems – 80% of all commercial communications satellites have parts manufactured by Com Dev
- Open Text was the source of Yahoo’s first search engine; today’s it is the world’s largest independent supplier of enterprise content management

Did you know that Google has an office in Kitchener, which is a leading engineering centre for research and development of Internet technology?

We’re not all high tech however. We have Toyota plants in Cambridge and Woodstock, which employ about 6,000 people. The Canadian head offices for the Economical Mutual Insurance Company and Equitable Life Insurance Company are both in town. Manulife and Sunlife also have large offices in K-W. If you like cookies, did you know that both Colonial Cookies and Dare manufacture their delectable’s in plants in Kitchener?

And don’t forget our farmers! Our farmer’s markets are famous for local fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry and baked goods. We are proud of the work they do.

GO Transit now makes daily trips to Toronto for commuters. There will be big changes coming in the next few years to local transit as well, as a Light Rapid Transit system will be put into place linking the north end of Waterloo with the south end of Kitchener.
